Showers, Toilets and Other Plumbing Quandaries

If you've traveled outside of the United States, you know that all bathrooms are not created equal. The following information can give you an idea of what to expect, but every place is different.

Showers

  • If there are 3 knobs, the center is usually "on/off" and left is "hot" and right is "cold".
  • There will usually be a squeegee for you to use to push the water that's on the floor into the floor drain.
  • There are not always shower curtains for the shower (see previous point).
  • Often, there are both a hand-held shower and an overhead shower. Make sure the hand shower is not pointing at you when you are turning on the water.

Toilets
  • There are usually 2 flush handles on a toilet. One is for a half-tank flush, the other for a full-tank flush. You can determine how much water is needed.
  • As with any public restrooms, you might want to take some tissue in with you, just in case they're out of paper.
  • Some public restrooms cost from 1 to 5 Shekels. Keep some change handy.

Other Plumbing Quandaries

  • Most sinks don't have garbage disposals, so peelings that go into the sink will have to come back out.
  • Washing machines tend to take a longer to run a cycle than US machines.
  • Many people don't have dryers, they hang out their laundry to dry.
